Johann Heinrich Engelke was born Feb. 15, 1854, in Staffhorst, Hanover, Germany. He came to this country March 6, 1894, locating after a short stay in Sutherland, O'Brien Co., Ia., in Wisconsin. He was married May 7th, 1878 to Louisa Dorothea Charlotte Riechers, who died Sept. 20, 1898.
This union was blessed with two sons and six daughters, one daughter dying in 1885. He had been ailing for some time and died Aug. 24, 1900, at the age of 46 years, 6 months and 9 days.
His funeral occurred Sunday morning at 11 o'clock at the German church, after which his remains were intered in the Belmont cemetery. He leaves two sons, five daughters, and an aged father, who resides in Germany to mourn his loss.
