1. Obituary. Edward Henry Westphal, age 99 years, 11 months and 6 days died peacefully at his home April 19, 2017. He was born May 13, 1917, in the town of Clifton, WI, to Otto and Sophia Susanna (Bindschaedel) Westphal. He was the third of nine children. In June of 1941 Edward was united in marriage to Irene Sommerfield.
Edward graduated from Kendall High School in 1934. After graduation he worked on the home farm and for neighbors. In 1936, he did mapping under the Agriculture Adjustment Act. When he was 20 years old, he hitchhiked to Iowa to help farmers there with the fall harvest.
At the age of 24, Edward married Irene. They started out with only his 1931 Chevrolet, which cost him $50 including the license. They made their home and livelihood farming and raised nine children. In 1974, Edward retired from farming and sold seed corn for DeKalb for seven years. They enjoyed nine years of retirement and traveling when he lost Irene to cancer in 1983. He worked 14 years for the A.S.C.S. agency doing crop damage assessment and measuring and plotting fields. He soon developed a reputation for exact and accurate work. Edward married Blanche Berg in 1984, and they continued to travel until her passing in 1994. In his lifetime, Edward visited 21 different countries.
Edward found his calling and his voice with his interest in politics. As early as the 1950's he served as Town of Tomah Treasurer. He was elected to the Town of Tomah as Assessor for two years and as Town of Adrian Assessor for four years. Edward was elected to the Monroe County Board of Supervisors for terms between 1980 to 2012, where he served faithfully for 22 years. In addition Edward was elected to the Tomah City Council for four years in the 1990's, serving one of those years as Council President.
Edward is survived by his children, Ronald (Betty) Westphal of Holmen, WI, Joann (Roger) Jones of Colorado Springs, CO, Lois (Dennis) Ferguson of Moses Lake, WA, Carole (Howard) Cyrus of Mukwonago, WI, Dorothy (Robert) Wilson of Tomah, WI, Dean (Kathy) Westphal of Tomah, WI, Lynn (Kieran) Clark of Marshfield, WI, Candace (Eric) Jensen of Tomah, WI, Ann (Eric) Schultz of Pickett, WI, 21 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren, one sister, Alvera Eckelberg and one brother, Carl Westphal.
He is preceded in death by his wives, Irene and Blanche, one grandson, Donald Wilson, two sisters, Gertrude Westphal and Ruth Cook, three brothers, Henry, Louis and Lloyd Westphal, and one sister, Doris Matias who passed away since his passing.
Family and friends were invited to share in a celebration of Edward's life on his 100th birthday, Saturday, May 13, 2017, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Warrens, WI with visitation from 10-11 a.m., and a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Phillip Enderle officiated. Burial was held at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Tomah, WI, with fellowship immediately following at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Warrens, WI.
Memorials were asked be given to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Warrens, Monroe County Meals on Wheels Program or Hospice Touch of Tomah. The Torkelson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
