1. Obituary. Gail Edward Tanner, age 81, of Platteville, died on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Southwest Health Center, Platteville. He was born on July 27, 1922, in Little Grant Township, the son of Edward A. and Catherine (Gabel) Tanner. He married Dorothy Sands on June 27, 1947, at the United Methodist Church, Platteville. She preceded him in death on June 7, 1974. On Nov. 18, 1980, he married Ivanell Peterson at Whig United Methodist Church, Platteville. Gail was a lifelong member of Whig United Methodist Church. He loved hunting, fishing and playing cards. Gail farmed near Platteville for many years, and was a member of the Grant County Farm Bureau for 39 years. He was a special deputy with the Grant County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard for many years, a member of the Grant County Cattlemen's Association and a former director of the Southwest Beef Cattle Cooperative. He is survived by his wife, Ivanell Tanner, Platteville; four children, Cheryl (John) Smoot, Lancaster, Greg Tanner, Platteville, Kevin (Lynne) Tanner, Platteville, and Schaun (fiancée, Barbara Koch), Maquoketa, Iowa; three stepchildren, Terry (Sandy) Peterson, Lancaster, Dennis (Carole) Peterson, Lancaster, and Sherry Peterson, Madison; nine grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; seven step- great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law, Carl Thier, Lancaster, Robert (Darlene) Near, Lancaster, and Gordon Sands, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; and two sisters, Gwen Thier and Eileen Near. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 26, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the MARTIN PAGE FUNERAL HOME, Platteville, with the Rev. Philip Airhart officiating. Burial will be in Whig Cemetery, Harrison Township. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, 2004, at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service Monday morning.
