PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- Harlan C. Gehrke, 92, of Platteville, died peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Southwest Health Center, Park Place, Platteville.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Platteville, with the Rev. Paul Stuebs officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home, Platteville. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

He was born on Oct. 19, 1916, on the family farm in Ellenboro Township, Grant County, son of Walter and Florence (Craven) Gehrke.

He attended the rural Buckwheat Ridge School where he met Helen Davies, his lifelong sweetheart. They were married on Aug. 15, 1934, in Madison; she preceded him in death on Nov. 9, 1996. This marriage was blessed with three children, Merlin, Janet and Deborah.

Harlan lived his passion by farming with his wife, Helen, in the Lima Union Township area for many years.

He was in the first F.F.A. established at Platteville High School and was a lifetime charter member. He started the 4H club, Union Hustlers, in 1946, and was a leader for many years.

He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Platteville.

Harlan and Helen enjoyed antiquing.

Surviving are two daughters, Janet (Cletus) Vondra and Deborah Raess, both of Platteville; a daughter-in-law, Harriet Deiter, of Cuba City; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his son, Merlin, on June 10, 1995; his parents; a brother, Earl; and a sister, Belva Moon.

Harlan married Helen I Davies. (Helen I Davies was born on 18 Nov 1916 and was buried in Platteville, WI, Hillside Cemetery.)
