1. Obituary. Eugene "Gene" A. Ingersoll, 88, of Lancaster, Wisconsin, died on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Orchard Manor, Lancaster.
He was born on June 19, 1937, in Belmont, Wisconsin, the son of Gordon and Ada (Burkholder) Ingersoll, Sr. Gene attended and graduated from Belmont High School, class of 1955. In the summer of 1956, Gene met his wife, Betty Wagner, from Livingston. They were united in marriage on June 18, 1960 at the Livingston United Methodist Church.
Gene worked for Lafayette County Farm Bureau in Belmont from 1955 to 1961. Following his marriage in 1960 and moving to Livingston in 1961, Gene worked as a carpenter apprentice with his father-in-law, building homes and remodeling for area families. In September 1964, Gene joined the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 314. In September 2016, Gene received his 50-year Gold Card Membership from the Regional Council of Carpenters. Over a period of thirty years, Gene worked in commercial building at the UW-Madison and UW-Platteville campuses as well as many other locations around the state of Wisconsin.
In 1994, Gene took early retirement from commercial building and joined up with an area carpenter spending the next years in residential and small business building and remodeling. In September 2001, Gene retired and pursued his favorite hobby of buying and selling collectibles, antiques, and interesting articles thought to have a value if Gene could find a buyer.
Gene was known to many as having a genuine gift of gab and always trying to make a deal. He could entertain a conversation with anyone willing to engage in bickering and humor which was always a part of "the deal". Gene was a loyal friend, caring husband and father, and very proud grandfather.
Gene is survived by his wife, Betty, of 65 years; daughter, Michele (Joe) Peacock of Chandler, AZ; two grandchildren, Emma and Jacob; brothers, William "Bill" (Kathy) Ingersoll of Platteville and James (Linda) Ingersoll of Baraboo; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Gordon "Junior" (Arlene) Ingersoll, sister, Joan (David) Edwards, and sister-in-law, Sherry Ingersoll.
A private family burial service will be held at Rock Church Cemetery, Livingston, at a later date followed by a celebration of life. The Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is serving the family. Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com.
