She was born Oct. 10, 1926, in Chicago, to Lawrence John and Rhoda (Edwards) Stratton.
On June 23, 1951, in Chicago, she married William Clark Ashby, whom she had met while they were students at University of Chicago.
She received her Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from that university and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
She taught biology and physiology at Iowa State Teachers College (now Northern Iowa University) for three years before her marriage.
At the time of her death, Rhoda was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale, Crab Orchard Lake Sailing Association, Southern Illinois Audubon Society and Illinois Native Plant Society.
Rhoda married William C Ashby, son of William Wallace Ashby and Mary C Littleton, in 1951. (William C Ashby was born on 6 Jul 1922 and was buried in Port Republic, MD, Christ Church Cemetery.)
