2. Miscellaneous. When Carol was 4, her mother (Nora Maukstad Mittelstadt) died. There were 6 children with the oldest being 12 and the youngest 10 months. Carol was second to youngest. Her dad, Clifford Mittelstadt, could not take care of 6 children and try to farm. All the kids went to various aunts and uncles to live.
Carol went to live with Leo Hintzman and his first wife, Nellie Mittelstadt. Nellie was a sister to Carol's father. About 4 years later, when Carol was 8 years old, Nellie passed away from cancer. She and Leo had no children. Leo did not want to lose Carol despite that she was not blood related. He married his housekeeper--Elizabeth Welk. So Carol grew up in their home and became what they called a foster daughter. Leo and Elizabeth went on to have 8 children.
Carol married Raymond Herbert Welk, son of Edward Herman Welk and Emma M Kohnke. (Raymond Herbert Welk was born in 1920 and was buried in Dubuque, IA, Dubuque Memorial Gardens.)
