• Obituary. LaVerne F. W. Hintzman, age 87, of Menomonie, died Monday, June 17, 2002, at the American Lutheran Home in Menomonie.
LaVerne was born Nov. 21, 1914, to Alie and Theresa (Schultz) Hintzman in the Town of Sherman on the farm that would be his home for 87 years. He attended Hillcrest Grade School and worked for his parents on the farm until 1951. Then he went to work for the Dunn County Highway Department and later as a grader man for the Town of Sherman.
LaVerne married Isabel Flick on May 31, 1941, at Friedens (now Peace) Lutheran Church in Menomonie. In November, following his father's death in September, 1953, LaVerne and his wife bought the family farm and LaVerne continued to work for the township and farm.
LaVerne was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Downsville for many years, president of the Menomonie Farmers Union Co-op for one year and served nine years as a board member. He was treasurer of the Hillcrest School District, project leader for the Hillcrest Comets 4-H Club, and president of the Menomonie Co-op Spray Ring. He served on the Peace Lutheran Church Council for three years and was congregational president one year. LaVerne also served as captain of the ushers and headed the money counters at the church for many years. He was the sexton at the Sherman Cemetery for many years.
In 1964, the Hintzman family hosted a Japanese IFYE (International Foreign Youth Exchange) student and enjoyed a long-lasting friendship with Kikue (Usui) Kato.
LaVerne and Isabel traveled to all 50 states as well as the Canadian Provinces, Germany, Switzerland, Leichtenstein, Italy, Israel, Mexico and Bermuda.
Over the years, they raised lovely Glads and gave them to churches, nursing homes, the hospitalized, for anniversaries and birthdays, etc. In 1992, LaVerne won grand champion with his prize Glads over the entire flower department at the St. Croix County Fair.
LaVerne enjoyed gardening and yard work, and after his retirement from farming in 1979, this became his hobby. But his heart truly was in working with power machinery.
LaVerne is survived by his wife, Isabel of Menomonie; one daughter, Dixe Lee (Roger) Lesneski of Ashland; two sons, Lonnie (Carole) Hintzman of Eau Claire and Lynn Hintzman of Menomonie; seven grandchildren, Michael (Diana) Lesneski of Ashland, Christine (Jim) Siebert of Ridgeland, Mathew (Traci) Lesneski of St. Paul, Minn., Christopher (Lynn) Lesneski of Superior, Scott Hintzman of Eau Claire, Valerie (Steve) Wing of Eau Claire, and Monica Hintzman of Menomonie; five great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Gregory Lesneski of Ashland, Joshua and Jordan Siebert of Ridgeland, and Alexander Wing of Eau Claire; two sisters, Vivian (Roy) Welk of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Mildred (Gene) Welk of Menomonie, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
