While still a boy of about eight years he came with his parents to Illinois, where he resided until 1848 when the family moved to Grant County, Wis., where he since resided. April 19, 1857, he was united in marriage to Eliza Toulouse. Twelve children were born to this union, nine of whom are still living.
Mr. VanNatta united with the Congregational church at Mt. Zion about 30 years ago. In 1901 he came to Platteville to make his home. He enjoyed good health until about six weeks ago, when the disease set in. All that loving hands could do was done, through his suffering, when he quietly fell asleep and departed this life to take up his abode in the Great Beyond.
He leaves to mourn his loss his bereaved wife, six daughters, Mrs. John English, Mrs. Morris Egan, Mrs. Ann Morris, Mrs. Wm. Carroll, Mrs. Ben Reuter of Cornelia and Mrs. Floyd Likens of La Crosse, Wis. Three sons, Ray and Tom of Potosi, and Vivian of Lancaster. Thirty-six grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. One brother Moses, of Cornelia and one sister, Mrs. John Toulouse of Montana.
In his long and useful life he gained many friends for he was a friend of everybody and harmed none.
Funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the house, the Rev. Guy Goodsell, officiating. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery.
