1. Obituary. John Van Buren France Dial Enterprise November 14, 1906
Mr. J. V. B. France was born in Coshocton, Ohio, February 21, 1842, (his parents being in the hotel business). He came to Wisconsin with his parents in 1858 and engaged in farming. He was married to Julia Ann Haney, October 1, 1861, and commenced farming for himself, but on the 7th day of August, 1862, at his country's call, he showed his patriotism by enlisting in the Company C of the 20th Regiment and served until the end of the war. He was fortunate in not being seriously wounded; however he did not come out of the war unsathed; having been wounded in the hand, and having contracted a disease which clung to him through life. He was in several hard fought battles -- Prairie Grove, Vicksburg, and Fort Morgan, being among them.
He moved to Pleasant Hill, Ill., in 1875, but the climate there did not agree with them and they came back to Wisconsin the next year. Since then he has engaged in farming--small fruit business-and mining.
Of late years he has been an enthusiatic miner and showna keen interest in the mine, even during his last illness.
He joined the Baptist Church in Boscobel in 1873 and was an enthusiastic worker in that church.
His health failed very rapidly for the past year, but his final illness was brief and attended with much sufferin. He passed away about 6:30 November 8, 1906. He leaves to mourn his departure a wife and five childern--Mrs. T. H. Brewer of Blue River, Mr. Johny France and Mrs. Olive Kitclinger, both of Boscobel; Mrs. W. H. Thomas and Mr. Howard France of Potosi, also a brother and a sister and a half sister and a half brother.
The funeral was held at the family residence, November 10, Rev. Vicher officiating.
Many of the old soldiers were in attendance, and the pall bearers were of their number, but the ranks are getting thin, and now one more has been "mustered out."
John married Julia Ann Haney, daughter of David Haney and Margaret McFall, on 1 Oct 1861 in Marion, Grant, WI. (Julia Ann Haney was born on 22 Sep 1841 in Coitsville, OH, died on 23 Feb 1933 in Boscobel, WI and was buried in Boscobel, WI, Boscobel Cemetery.)
