Came to America in 1840
per page 924 of the History of Grant County, 1881 - This ca me near being his last work, as he was nearly crushed to de ath, by being drawn from the shaft against some timber over head, by a 30 HP engine. For months it was thought he woul d not live, and it was years before he was able to work. H owever, he came to America again in 1846, and lived in Plat teville, WI, until 1850, when he went to California. Nin e months later, he returned and settled on a farm. In 185 3 he had eighty acres in section 6 of Platteville, Wisconsi n. Hiw first wife Peggy Mitchell died in England. He marr ied a Platteville lady by the name of Ellen Stephens, who d ied thirteen months later, on 24 September, 1876, at the ag e of 34 years. He then married katherine (Augustine) Potho ur. He had no children.
Ambrace was quite wealthy by the standard of that day, bu t he had no desire to transfer the bulk of his savings to t he local banks, so left them in the bank of England. He di ed in Platteville, but was returned to England for burial.
