1. Obituary. Gary D. Pothour, 84, of Platteville, Wisconsin died Wednesday, November 29, 2023. Services celebrating Gary's life will be at noon on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Melby Funeral Home & Crematory in Platteville. Deacon Bill Bussan will officiate. Fireman's Honor call will offered by the Platteville Volunteer Fire Department. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of service at the funeral home. Gary was born on June 21, 1939 the son of Donald and Margaret (Kartmann) Pothour. He graduated from high school in 1957. Gary had the honor of becoming an Eagle Scout. On October 22, 1960, he married the love of his life, Nancy Holzer at Holy Ghost Church in Dickeyville, WI. He was very proud of their 63 years of marriage. Gary was an Account Executive in radio sales for over 30 years for these various stations, WSWW, KDTH,WDBQ and the television station KDUB-TV. He then worked for Dick's Supermarket until his retirement. In the 60's he served on Platteville's City Council. In his younger years, he was a member of the Jaycees. Gary was a volunteer fireman for 17 years. He served on the Mining Museum board and St. Mary's Catholic Church finance committee. Through St. Mary's, Gary went on several mission trips including Jamaica, Missouri and Louisiana after the Katrina hurricane. He had a very strong faith and loved his church. Gary also worked as a handyman and was very good at fixing things. He was always willing to lend a hand and help whoever he could. Gary was an avid fisherman and loved spending time outdoors. He was a big fan of westerns, especially if John Wayne was the star. Gary also enjoyed watching the Badgers and spending time with his McDonald's coffee buddies.
Gary is survived by his wife Nancy, daughters, Jennie Pothour and Nicole (Matt) Etringer; grandchildren, Courtnie, Adison and Grayson; great-grandchildren, Bradey and Tatum; brother, Jim Pothour; sister-in-laws Marilyn (Dave) Koenig and Mary Pothour, and Marilyn (Dave) Koenig, brother-in-law, Bob (Lexa) Holzer. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Denny, brother Gene Pothour, father and mother-in-law, Al and Loretta Holzer, and his fishing buddy, Dallas Gardner.
Jennie, Nicole and their families want to express a big thank you for everything their Mom Nancy did for Gary these last few years. The family also would like to THANK Dr. White for his care.
