PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- Ethel Mae Butson, 100, of Platteville, passed away Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at ManorCare Health Services, Platteville.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, with the Rev. Steve Borwick officiating. Burial will be in Whig Cemetery, rural Platteville. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

She was born on Aug. 16, 1909, in Mifflin Township, Iowa County, daughter of Ben and Rose (Fox) Gehrke, and just celebrated her 100th birthday. She married Tom Butson on Aug. 16, 1928, in Lima Township, on the family farm; he preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1991.

Ethel and Tom farmed in Grant County for many years and took great pride of their herd of registered Holsteins.

She enjoyed doing genealogy, family history, putting together photo albums, scrap booking and square dancing. Ethel always enjoyed being with her family and visiting with her many friends. She had a very strong faith in the Lord.

Surviving are her son, Jim (Darlene) Butson, of Platteville; a son-in-law, Raymond Skaife, of Lancaster; 11 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 42 great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many special friends.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; daughters, Jane Butson, on Dec. 22, 1995, and Pearl Skaife, on Aug. 21, 2009; eight infant children; two grandsons, Alan Butson, on Sept. 4, 2005, and Peter Skaife, on Oct. 15, 1988; a brother, Dale Gehrke; and a sister, Bernadine Sierra-George.
