1. Obituary. Warren- Three children of Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Gollmer drowned Sunday afternoon in an artificial pond while their parents stoodby unable to swim and helpless to prevent the tragedy on their farm five miles southwest of here.

Dead are Allan, 17, Charles, 13, and Claude, 10. The three boys had paddled a homemade raft into deep water on a three acre pond created by the damming of a creek in the government conservation program.

The youngest child slipped into the water and the other boys plunged in after him in a rescue attempt. None of the boys knew how to swim.

Mr. and Mrs. Gollmer, who could not swim either, witnessed the incident from the bank. Gollmer said he flung himself into the water in an effort to save his sons, but had to turn back before he drowned.

John Bausman, a neighbor, arrived at the scene in answer to screams by the mother. He was unable to find the children in the murkey water.

Jo Daviess County deputy sheriffs dynamited the dam which retained the pond. They recovered the bodies after three hours. Allan, who was scheduled to graduate from Warren High School in two weeks, was born Oct. 19, 1938, in Warren, Charles, a seventh grade pupil at Warren School was born Jan 11, 1943. Claude, a fifth grade pupil, was born June 3, 1945.
