John C. Rech was the son of Henry and Margaret Rech. He lea rned the trade of baker in his father's shop in Germany. A t 17 he left home for America and landed at Baltimore wher e he worked as a baker. He soon left for the higher wages o f $1.00 a day as a workman where they were digging a canal . He acquired malaria on this job and was nursed back to he alth by Dunkards near Little York, Penn. When he recovere d he repaid them by working in their settlement for them. H e left there and worked as a handy man and farm hand and al so worked on the Erie and Maumee Canals. In the autumn of 1 840 he started working in the lead mines of Galena and sout hwestern Wis. For seveal years he spent the summers in th e mines and the winters in Ohio.
John joined the army 4 months before actual declaration o f war by Congress. His company was ordered to support Gen . Taylor on the Rio Grand and they took part in the battle s of Montery and Buena Vista. John nursed Gen. Homer afte r he was wounded at Montery and the general died in his arm s while he was attending him. After serving his 12 months J ohn re-enlisted and took part in the advance on the city o f Mexico, but peace was declared when they were 45 miles fr om the capitol. Until 1878 John worked in the mines and sm elting works. Upon leaving the mines he purchased the far m on which he lived for over 22 years.
Fought in the Mexican War at the battles of Monteray and Bu ena Vista in Gen. Butler;s brigade. Enrolled June 27, 184 6 at Cincinnati, Ohio. He was mustered in Aug 31, 1846 i n Mexico. Mustered out June 12, 1847 in New Orleans. He w as a pvt in Co. H., 1st reg of Ohio Volunteers under Capt M iller. In Sept, 1847 in Capt Howards Co. G.Voltigeurs (lt . inffantry sharpshooters). Discharged at Baltimore, Md a t close of war about time peaches ripe in 1848. Went wes t 7 years during the goldrush. Worked in the Galena, Ill . mines. Lived in Mankato, Minn for awhile. When his daug hter Margaret went to fetch water there, a panther scared h er. He killed the panther. They finall settled in Paris T wp Potosi..
