1. Obituary: Appleyard's Home for Funerals. Donald P. Zimmerman, age 88, of Rice Lake, WI died Monday, October 5, 2009 at the Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake.
He was born September 8, 1921 to Phillip and Mary (Scheu) Zimmerman in Rice Lake. After receiving his elementary education at St. Joseph School he attended the Rice Lake High School graduating in 1939. He then joined the United States Marine Corp serving in the South Pacific and Alaska during World War II. After receiving an Honorable Discharge he returned to Rice Lake. On June 3, 1946 he was married to Helen Andrews in Rice Lake. Don went to work at his fathers Zimmerman Jewelry Store in Rice Lake which he and his wife owned and operated until 1983. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Rice Lake Elk's Club. Donald's interest in life was spending time with his family and friends.
Mr. Zimmerman is survived by 5 daughters and sons-in-law, Susan & Tom Koepp of Pewaukee, WI, Mary & John Batalden of Wayzata, MN, Carla & Terry Sirek, Lisa & Greg Leach and Kay & Terry Dittloff all of Rice Lake, WI; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Zimmerman of Madison, WI; 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lyle (Bernice) Zimmerman of Rochester, MN and a sister, Jean (Tom) Hurlburt of Onalaska, WI. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Zimmerman in 1983; a son, Mark Zimmerman; his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 AM Friday, October 9, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rice Lake, Fr. James Powers officiating, with interment in the St. Joseph Cemetery where Military Rites will be Accorded by the Marine Corp Honor Guard. Friends may call from 4 - 7 PM Thursday at Appleyard's Home for Funerals and for 1 hour prior to the funeral at the Church.
Donald married Helen Martha Andrews, daughter of Harry Bismarck Andrews and Martha Margarta Barnaske, on 3 Jun 1946 in Rice Lake, WI, St Joseph's Rectory. (Helen Martha Andrews was born on 24 Apr 1917 in Chippewa Falls, WI, died on 19 Jan 1984 in Rice Lake, WI and was buried in Rice Lake, WI, St Joseph's Cemetery.). The cause of her death was Breast Cancer.
