Married to Viola Gartland on 8-22-1952 at Valley City, N.D.
The Rev. Hovis graduated from Cheyenne High School in Cheyenne, Wyo., in 1941. He then graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1945. He attended the San Francisco Presbyterian Theological Seminary and graduated in 1948. He was ordained to the Gospel Ministry at the First Presbyterian Church in Cheyenne, Wyo., in 1948. He pastored churches in Moorcroft, Wyo., from 1948 to 1950, Crosby, N.D., from 1950 to 1957, and Cavalier, N.D., from 1957 to 1965. He was the moderator of the Presbyterian Synod of North Dakota from 1963 to 1965. He then pastored the First Presbyterian Church in Schuyler from 1965 to 1978, and the United Presbyterian Church in Central City from 1978 to 1988.
He honorably retired from the Gospel Ministry by action of the Central Nebraska Presbytery in September 1988. He retired in Grand Island on Nov. 1, 1988.
