Leota Laura Wieland

• Obituary. Funeral services for Leota L. Lien, 92, of Hettinger, ND will be Monday, December 10, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hettinger Lutheran Church in Hettinger. Rev. Kathleen Dettmann will officiate and burial will follow at the Hettinger Cemetery. Visitations will be from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Homes in Hettinger, north of the High School and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Monday morning.

Leota Laura Wieland was born January 7, 1920 to Anna (Koeller) and John Wieland in Hettinger County, ND. She attended a country school in Alden Township and graduated from Regent High School. While attending high school, she worked many jobs in order to pay for her education.

Leota married Oscar Lien on September 11, 1932 and from this union eight children were born. Oscar and Leota raised their family on a farm in Wagendorf Township. After retiring from farming, they took up bowling and loved it. Later they moved their home to Hettinger and she lived in it until five years ago when she moved to the Western Horizon's Assisted Living Apartment. They took up the game of golf which before learning it, thought it was like chasing a little white ball around in the pasture. They belonged to the Winnebago Club, traveling extensively and making many friends and visiting relatives.

She was a great seamstress, crocheted many baby afghans, and in later years sorted and sewed buttons on cards for the clothes closet. She loved to waltz and play cards.

Leota passed away at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger on Friday, November 30, 2012.

Leota is survived by her children, Winona Olson, New England, ND, Linda (James) Stippich, Hettinger, ND, Dixie (Larry) Lehman, Salt Lake City, UT, Wesley (Kathryn) Lien, New River, AZ, Carol (Fred) White, Ravensdale, WA, Peggy (Calvin) Klewin, Bowman, ND, Kenneth Lien, North Island, CA and Wallace (Sandra) Lien, Redfield, SD; 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter and sisters-in-law, Ann Wieland and Dorothy Lien.

Leota was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Wieland, husband, Oscar Lien, brothers, Leonard, Ernest and Ed Wieland, sisters, Frances Thompson, Dorothy Mae Strand, Caroline Ehleringer, Donelda Oberlander, son-in-law, Charles Olson, great grandson, Brandon Anderson and great granddaughter-in-law, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Thalia (Ramirez) Balbeck.

Leota married Oscar August Lein. (Oscar August Lein was born on 23 Aug 1913 and was buried in Hettinger, ND, Hettinger Cemetery.)
