Thomas (Tug) Hurlburt, age 88, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2016 at Bethany Riverside in La Crosse, Wisconsin surrounded by his five children.

Tug was born on May 5, 1928 in Ruby, Wisconsin to Harry and Ruth Hurlburt. He was raised in Cornell, Wisconsin and enlisted in the Army serving in Occupied Japan post World War II. Tug returned to Cornell and worked as the editor of the Cornell Courier. He married local kindergarten teacher, Jean Zimmerman on August 4, 1951 at St. Joseph Church in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. Together they raised four daughters and one son.

After working for Brown & Bigelow in St. Paul, Minnesota, Tug established Hurlburt Printing in Rice Lake. He additionally managed the school bus company for JW Smith & Sons.

Tug was a humble, hardworking man who encouraged and took significant pride in the educational accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. An avid hunter and fisherman, a prized possession is his 13 pound walleye caught on the shore of Rice Lake.

Tug is survived by his wife, Jean; daughters, Patty (Greg) Martin, Debby (Dave Weingartner), Sandy (Bob) Ayres, Mary (John) Blaha; son, Tom; 15 grandchildren, three great-granddaughters, and three step-children. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Jeanette Hurlburt, Arlene Martin, Laurel Craker; and his brother, Harold (Bud) Hurlburt.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 Saturday, September 3, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with visitation for one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will follow. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Paul's Pantry or the Senior Citizens' Center in Rice Lake.
