1928-2016

Jean Hurlburt, age 88, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2016 at Bethany Riverside in La Crosse, Wisconsin with her five children at her side.

Jean (Zimmerman) was born on May 25, 1928 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin to Phil and Mary Zimmerman. She graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1946 and then attended Miss Wood's School for Elementary Teachers at Macalaster College in St. Paul, Minnesota. Upon graduation, she began teaching kindergarten in Cornell, Wisconsin where she met Tom (Tug) Hurlburt. They were married on August 4, 1951 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rice Lake.

After residing for a time in St. Paul, Minnesota, they settled in Rice Lake where together they raised four daughters and a son. A very caring, kind and gentle woman, Jean's love of children was evident throughout her whole life. After her own children grew older, she worked part-time at the Wee Folk's Home and Hilltop Day Care Center. She was very involved in St. Joseph Church, including serving on the board for the parish school. Jean was also active in 4-H, the Christian Women's Club and Fortnightly. She touched the lives of everyone she knew and was universally loved by all her family and acquaintances.

Jean is survived by daughters, Patty (Greg) Martin, Debby (Dave) Weingartner, Sandy (Bob) Ayres, Mary (John) Blaha; son, Tom; 15 grandchildren, three great-granddaughters, and three grand-stepchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tug; her parents; sisters, Phyllis and Eleanor; and brothers, Don, Harold (Stub), Lyle and Lloyd.

A funeral Mass and luncheon will be held at St. Joseph Church on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service.
