Ralph Sutliff Bushnell 1
Moved to Wisconsin in spring of 1853. Served with Comp . B 43rd Reg. Wis. Vols from Aug 30, 1864 to June 24, 186 5 as a cook. The 43rd was sent from Wisconsin to Nashvill e in Oct 1864 and then to Johnsonville, Tn. to guard an imp ortant supply depot and rail line. Here they were menace d by Confederate forces under Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest w hen he was on his way to join Gen. Hood's army, before th e battle at Nashville. In Jan. 1865 the 43rd moved by rai l to Decherd Station, Tn. Here they guarded the supply rou te to Chattanooga. While in the area of Decherd Station, t he 43rd had some encounters with bushwackers and with Marma duke's Guerrillas.
1. Miscellaneous. Enlisted for one year in the Union Army August 30, 1864, at Platteville, Wisconsin, with the 43rd Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, Co. B. He was 43 years old, 5' 10 1/2" high and listed his occupation as farmer. He was mustered in September 15, 1864 at Camp Washburn in Milwaukee. According to his military records, he was on daily duty as the company cook from December 1864 to April 1865. He was mustered out at Decherd Station, TN on June 24, 1865. When he was mustered out he was "Due US $6 for 1 musket and set of accouterments retained under General Order No 101." Ralph married Sylvia Amanda Tyler, daughter of Abel Tyler and Sylvia Lewis, on 20 Aug 1846 in OH. (Sylvia Amanda Tyler was born on 10 Feb 1826 in OH, died on 29 Apr 1897 in Harrison Township, Grant County, WI and was buried in Platteville, WI, Whig Cemetery.)
