1. Obituary. Joseph Wieland, a well known and esteemed citizen of Glencoe township, Buffalo county, now residing at Davis Corners, was born in Dubuque, Iowa,(Grüsch, Switzerland) April 4 (25), 1854, a son of Rudolph Wieland, by his second wife, whose name is now unknown (Elsbeth Warnier). The parents were natives of Switzerland, who came to the United States at an early day by sailing vessel. The vessel meeting with an accident, was delayed, and the voyage took four months. Glad to find themselves on dry land once more Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Wieland proceeded west to Dubuque, Iowa, which place they made their home for awhile. Later they removed to Grant county, Wisconsin, where they took land in the woods and cleared a farm. In addition to Joseph, who was the only child of the second marriage, there was another child by Rudolph's first wife, and later three other children were born of a third marriage. Joseph Wieland spent his earliest years in Dubuque and accompanying his parents to Grant county, Wisconsin, there grew to manhood. He worked at farming, saved his money, and in 1879 bought a tract of 200 acres, mostly in section 36, Glencoe township, Buffalo county, though 28 acres lay in Trempealeau county. He also purchased land in section 35. In the year that he located here he was married to Emma Keller, a niece of George Keller, who built the sawmill in Glencoe township. She was born in Switzerland, Nov. 15, 1855, daughter and John and Anna (Gubler) Keller. Her parents had come to Glencoe township in 1856, settling on land in sectin 3, where they built a frame house. The father raised his own ox team from cows brought with them and in time developed a good farm. He also helped his brother George to build the sawmill above mentioned, being a millwright by trade. Joseph Wieland and his wife resided on their farm until 1914, when they moved to their present location at Davis' Corners, and are residing on a tract of 80 acres, owned by their son, R. J. Wieland. While engaged in farming, Mr. Wieland bred good Shorthorn cattle and was one of the first to become interested in the local creamery, serving as a director on the board. He also held office on the town side board and was twice treasurer, besides rendering good service on the schhol board of his district. He and his wife reared a family of five children: Albert, now a leading citizen of Glencoe township, who married Laura Vesperman, and has one child, Donald; Rudolph, who is living on the old homestead; Henry, a dentist in Chicago; David, cashier of the Farmers Bank of Arcadia, Wis., and Louise, who is the wife of Walter T. Apple, of South Dakota, and has one child, Esmeralda. (Emma Keller was born on 15 Nov 1855, died on 28 Nov 1932 and was buried in Glencoe, WI, Glencoe Lutheran Cemetery.)
