1. Obituary: Winona Daily News; Date: Sept 26, 1963; Page: 11. Arcadia, Wis. - Albert G. Wieland, 81, died in his sleep at home here Tuesday night.
When Miss Jessie Kopp, housekeeper in the Wieland home, called him this morning, he didn't answer. On investigation, she found him dead in bed. Mrs. Wieland is an invalid following a stroke.
He was born Oct. 8, 1881, in the town of Glencoe, Buffalo County, son of Joseph and Emma Keller Wieland. On Dec. 20, 1906, he married Laura Verperman of Lancester, Wis. That year they purchased a farm in Glencoe and lived there until 39 years ago when they retired and moved to the city of Arcadia.
Mr. Wieland was school clerk, town clerk and justice of the peace in Glencoe. He helped consolidate the Arcadia and Glencoe creameries and served as director of the consolidation many years. In 1947 he became assessor here, serving many years. He also was on the Arcadia school board and was a Sunday school teacher at American Luthern Church seveal years.
Survivors are: His wife; three grandchildren, and one brother, Rudolph, Arcadia. His only son, Donald, and his wife, were killed in a car accident at Waterloo, Iowa, this year.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. at American Lutheran Church, the Rev. Walter Schultheiss, Marshfield, former pastor here, will officiate. Burial will be in Glencoe Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday at Killian Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home Friday at 11 a.m. The casket will not be open at the church.
2. Other: Written by AG Wieland, May 1959. Albert George Wieland, son of Joseph and Emma Keller Wieland, was born in Glencoe Township, Buffalo County, Wisconsin on Oct 28, 1881. He received his early education in Cowie's School in Glencoe Township. In 1904 he graduated from Arcadia High School with a class of nine boys. He taught school for four years prior to graduation from High School. In 1905 he took a course at Oshkosh Normal School. In 1906 he purchased the William Wirtenberger farm in Glencoe Township. On December 20, 1906, he married Laura Vesperman of Lancaster Wisconsin. To this union one son, Donald Henry Wieland was born. Mr and Mrs Wieland continued farming for 39 years, and after leasing the farm for a number of years, sold it to Lee Wieland (nephew) and Jerome Schollmeier, son in law of Rudolph J Wieland (brother).
Mr Wieland's first ambition in life was to provide a home for his family. In this respect he was successful. He felt a secondary duty to give part time and a little talent in the interest of his community. While on the farm he served as school clerk, town clerk, Justice of the Peace, helped organize the first cow testing association in the Glencoe and Arcadia area, served as its first President, and was director of the Farmers State Bank. In 1923 he helped consolidate the two existing cooperative creameries into the Glencoe and Arcadia area into one large A&G Coop Creamery, was secretary of the St Consolidating Comm and later served as a director for many years.
In 1947, he was elected school clerk of School District Jt 1 of the City of Arcadia, served 9 years, during this time nearly all the schools (rural) in Arcadia, Glencoe, Dodge, Cross, Montana and Waumandee Townships consolidated with Jt 1 of the City of Arcadia. He is a member of the American Lutheran Church, taught Sunday school for many years. He was convinced that jesus Christ is the corner stone of the New Testament.Church and believed in St John 5-39. He was convinced that the Christian church was built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone (Ephesians 2-20).
Mr Wieland up to the last took an active part in the political and religious life of his community and was pleased to learn of the welfare of his son and 3 grandchildren (David Albert, Gary Donald, and Carol Ann).
Albert married Laura Vesperman, daughter of Christian Vesperman Sr and Salina Wieland, on 20 Dec 1906 in Lancaster Township, Grant County, WI.
