1. Obituary. LANCASTER \endash Michelle M. "Shelly" Schmitz, age 59 of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 22, 1961, the daughter of Norbert and Arlene (Russell) Wieland. Shelly graduated from Potosi High School. On September 16, 1978, she married James K. Schmitz at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they farmed in South Lancaster Township. Shelly enjoyed flowers, gardening, crafts and decorating her home. She had a very artistic way with projects. Shelly attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Burton. She dearly loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.
Surviving is her husband Jim; sons: Eric (Holly), Dusty (Mary Jo), Jesse (Cassie), Jake (Kari) Schmitz; her grandchildren: Ethan, Jalen, Payton, Ashton, Cam, Danny, Sadie, Wyatt, Brady, and Brielle; her father, Norbert Wieland; her brothers: Mike, Curt (Sheila), Chad (Stephanie) Wieland; an uncle, Denny Stluka; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Shelly was preceded in death by her mother, Arlene Wieland; her father and mother-in-law, Robert and Leila Schmitz; her aunts: Delores "Toddy" (Udell) Ames; Bonnie Stluka; a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Brendemuehl.
Private family funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 15, 2020, at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory in Lancaster with Pastor David Froemming officiating. Burial will be in Hurricane Cemetery, South Lancaster Township. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to Linda Rech, Sheila Wieland, and the nurses with Agrace Hospice for the care given to our family.
