Sergeant Reid Q Merry, Service Number: 17037697, served as tail gunner on B-17s with the 508th Bomber Squadron, 351st Bomber Group. On 28 June 1943, during a mission to destroy the dry docks at St Nazaire, France, in B-17 #42-29817, 'Argonaut II', the crew encountered a critical situation when heavy flak knocked out all engines of their aircraft. The airmen were forced to ditch in the Bay of Biscay, where only four were found by French fishermen.
